At this time, the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (NC DEQ) offers its own free training for all classes of operators.

There are two options for primary operator training:

  1. Attend UST Tank School in person, or
  2. Complete an online class with N.C. Department of Environmental Quality

UST Training Requirements for North Carolina

All underground storage tank (UST) owners are required to have a trained primary operator and a trained emergency response operator. Tank owners must designate a primary operator for each facility. Primary operators must be employees of the facility owner or operator. Third-party contractors or testing companies are not able to serve as primary operators.

In addition, DEQ requires the training of all Class C operators, also referred to as the emergency response operator, by the Class A or Class B operator. To help primary operators train the Emergency Response Operators, the North Carolina DEQ website offers an Operator Training Manual and training slides.

Reciprocity & Additional Resources

The state of North Carolina does not accept UST operator certifications from other states. For more information on UST training requirements in North Carolina, visit: https://deq.nc.gov/about/divisions/waste-management/ust/operator-training
