UST Operator Training Resources for California

At this time, the only California state-approved UST training provider is the International Code Council (ICC). Below you’ll find details on specific training requirements for all classes of operators, as well as quick links to ICC training and more information.

Designated UST Operator Requirements for California

California’s underground storage tank (UST) rules do not designate classes of operators. Instead, the state has established a “Designated UST Operator” title. Designated operators are individuals whom have been designated by the facility’s owner to be responsible for training employees and conducting monthly visual inspections. The designated operator must comply with other applicable state, federal or local requirements, and must comply with the following requirements of the UST law:

  • Possesses a current "California UST System Operator" certificate issued by the International Code Council (ICC)
  • Provides on-the-job training for facility employees
  • Performs monthly visual inspections, records results on an inspection report, and submits the written report to the owner/operator
