UST Training Requirements for North Carolina

All underground storage tank (UST) owners are required to have a trained primary operator and a trained emergency response operator. Tank owners must designate a primary operator for each facility. Primary operators must be employees of the facility owner or operator. Third-party contractors or testing companies are not able to serve as primary operators.

In addition, DEQ requires the training of all Class C operators, also referred to as the emergency response operator, by the Class A or Class B operator. To help primary operators train the Emergency Response Operators, the North Carolina DEQ website offers an Operator Training Manual and training slides.

Reciprocity & Additional Resources

The state of North Carolina does not accept UST operator certifications from other states. For more information on UST training requirements in North Carolina, visit: https://deq.nc.gov/about/divisions/waste-management/ust/operator-training
